The Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James, is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in the world. It leads to the shrine of the apostle Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. Among its many paths, the most iconic is the “Camino Francés” (The French Way), which starts in the French Pyrenees and spans approximately 800 kilometers. Pilgrims and hikers from around the world embark on this journey for spiritual, cultural, or recreational reasons. Along the way, travellers experience stunning landscapes, charming villages, and rich history throughout Spain, making it a unique and transformative adventure.
Today, The Camino is more than just a pilgrimage; it has become an excellent way to explore the culture and gastronomy of Northern Spain. Our proposal is to cycle from León to Santiago, selecting the best hotels and routes along the way, focusing on paved paths and easier sections of this ancient trail. Of its many paths, the stretch from León to Santiago de Compostela is particularly iconic, offering breathtaking landscapes, charming villages, and a deep cultural and spiritual experience.
Cycling the Camino from León to Santiago de Compostela in six days is both a physical challenge and a spiritual adventure. The landscapes are diverse, the culture is vibrant, and the people—both locals and fellow pilgrims—create a sense of community and shared purpose. Reaching Santiago is not just about completing the journey, but about the memories, reflections, and connections made along the way.
Since most of the roads are dirt-roads, we only offer this trip for MTB E bikes and MTB bikes.
Itinerary Overview
Welcome to Madrid!: We will be waiting for you to pick you up in the airport the day before, and after dined in style in Madrid the night before, we will transfer the next day all the way to the Sierra de Guadarrama (1h) where we will do our fitting in order to cycle down to Segovia and visit its roman aqueduct and its beautiful city centre.
Evening: We will arrive in Leon for a welcome dinner at a traditional Spanish restaurant. Enjoy local specialties and get ready for an unforgettable cycling adventure.
Overnight: 4* Hotel in León
Morning: After breakfast, we will start our route to Astorga, an old roman city.
Cycling Route: The journey begins in León, a city rich in history and stunning architecture, including the impressive Gothic Cathedral of León. After a morning exploring the city, you set off on a ride through gentle terrain and rural landscapes. The day ends in Astorga, known for its Episcopal Palace designed by Gaudí and its delicious chocolate.
Lunch: Enjoy a cocido maragato in a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Explore Astorga roman museum, Gaudi Palace and Astorga Catedral.
Overnight: Stay in a 4* hotel in Astorga.
Morning: After breakfast we start the ride in a scenic area nearby Cruz de Hierro and the pueblos Maragatos.
Cycling Route: This stage will take you through rolling hills and ascends to the Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross), one of the Camino’s most symbolic points, where pilgrims traditionally leave a stone to symbolize their burdens. After descending through beautiful forested paths, you arrive in Ponferrada, home to an impressive Templar Castle.
Lunch: Enjoy a meal in one of the local village restaurants, in Molinaseca.
Afternoon: We will transfer by car to Vilafranca del Bierzo where we spend the afternoon strolling through this picturesque village, taking in the local culture and stunning views or enjoying the hotel Parador of vilafranca. This area is well known for its wine so get ready to sample some of the best red wine in the region with a visit to a bodega in Villafranca.
Overnight: Stay in a Parador 4 stars hotel in Vilafranca.
Morning: We start the day with a 30 min transfer to the celtic town of O’cebreiro at the gates of the green Galicia region
Cycling Route: we will cycle to O Cebreiro, with its ancient stone houses and unique history, it feels like stepping back in time. From O Cebreiro, the route enters Galicia fully, with green hills, lush forests, and tranquil farmland.
Lunch: Enjoy a meal in one of the local village restaurant
Afternoon: After lunch we leave the Camino area to drive to the wine region of Monforte de Lemos. Visit a winery in the river Sil valley.
Overnight: 4 stars hotel, Parador of Monforte de Lemos
Morning: After breakfast, we make a transfer back to the Camino (45 min) to continue our cycling journey
Cycling Route: we alternate the path with local roads through little towns, farms and massive forests. We stop to visit one of the oldests castles in Galicia. The descent toward Sarria is smoother, and this town is significant as it marks the last 100 km required for pilgrims to earn La Compostelana (certificate of completion).
Lunch: Stop for a picnic in a medieval castle
Afternoon: Once in Arzua it’s time to relax in our charming country house hotel
Overnight: Country House 4* Hotel in Arzua
Morning: After breakfast we start our final stage towards Santiago de Compostela. This final stage of the journey is filled with anticipation and excitement.
Cycling Route: The day runs almost entirely in the path inside the forest, visiting little towns on the way and getting along with some other excited travellers on the last miles of our journey, and the iconic Monte do Gozo, where pilgrims first glimpse the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Arriving in Santiago and entering the Plaza del Obradoiro is an unforgettable experience. The majestic cathedral, final resting place of Saint James, marks the triumphant end of your journey.
Lunch: Stop for lunch in a restaurant entering Santiago
Afternoon: Visit the city with your guide after reaching the cathedral for the first time at the famous Plaza del Obradoiro.
Overnight: 5 stars hotel close to the cathedral.
If you have time there is an optional extension of 30 km ride to the cape and lighthouse Finisterre (the end of the world in Latin) to reach the Atlantic Ocean to finish in style.
