The Alpujarras, located on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada in Spain, has a rich history influenced by various cultures. After the Reconquista in 1492, many Muslims were expelled or converted, leading to uprisings like the Revolt of the Alpujarras. Over time, Christian settlers arrived, creating a blend of cultures reflected in the area’s architecture and traditions.
Today, the Alpujarras is celebrated for its stunning landscapes, traditional whitewashed villages, and as a popular destination for hiking and nature lovers, showcasing its complex and harmonious heritage. Our proposal is to explore the stunning and diverse landscapes of Granada and the Alpujarras, from the snow-capped peaks to alpine forests and even surprising Cappadocia desert lookalikes on a 6-day guided moderate MTB cycling adventure.
Pedal through scenic mountain villages, charming whitewashed towns, and breathtaking valleys while enjoying local gastronomy and the rich cultural heritage of southern Spain. The Alpujarras is one of the wildest areas in Spain, where the book “Driving Over Lemons” by Chris Stewart is set. The trip concludes with a privately guided walking tour of the UNESCO-listed Alhambra at night (a magical experience).
Since most of the roads are dirt-roads, we only offer this trip for MTB E-bikes and MTB bikes.
Itinerary Overview
Welcome to Granada: Arrive in the beautiful city of Granada, known for its Moorish architecture and rich history.
Evening: Meet your guide and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner at a traditional Andalusian restaurant. Enjoy local specialties and get ready for an unforgettable cycling adventure.
Overnight: 4* Hotel in Granada.
Morning: After breakfast, transfer to Sierra Nevada Ski Resort heading towards the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
Cycling Route: Pedal through breathtaking mountain landscapes, dotted with terraced fields and whitewashed houses. The journey leads you to Capileira, one of the highest villages in the Alpujarras.
Lunch: Enjoy a picnic with the best views
Afternoon: Explore Capileira’s narrow streets and stunning viewpoints.
Overnight: Stay in a cozy rural Country House in Capileira.
Morning: After breakfast we start the ride in a scenic area nearby villages of Pampaneira and Bubión.
Cycling Route: Experience the charm of the Alpujarras as you cycle through narrow paved and unpaved mountain roads, surrounded by chestnut trees and rugged peaks. These villages are famous for their unique architecture and traditional way of life.
Lunch: Enjoy a meal in one of the local village restaurants, with incredible views of the valley.
Afternoon: Spend the afternoon strolling through these picturesque villages, taking in the local culture and stunning views or enjoy the hotel Spa. Trevélez is known for its air-dried ham, so get ready to sample some of the best cured meats in the region with a visit to a secadero de jamones in Trevelez.
Overnight: Stay in a local country house in Bérchules.
Morning: After breakfast, we have a little transfer to reach some altitude to start the ride on a dirt road.
Cycling Route: For half of the day we cycle through the high altitude path inside the inner valleys of the National Park through alpine landscapes with magnificent views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Then we continue cycling on pavement to La Calahorra, with its magnificent s. XVI castle, one of the first Italian Renaissance castles to be built outside Italy.
Lunch: Stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
Afternoon: Take in the panoramic views, and relax in the peaceful hotel spa .
Overnight: Stay in a charming rural 4* Hotel in Hueneja.
Morning: After breakfast, we continue our cycling journey to La Peza, with its beautiful views of la Vega from its Mirador until we reach the town of Graena, with its cave houses, well known for its thermal spa baths, one of the oldest in Spain.
Cycling Route: Ride through pine forest landscapes with magnificent views of the Sierra Nevada mountains where you can see plenty of mountain goats roaming around.
Lunch: Stop for a picnic lunch and enjoy a tasting of local delicacies brought by Sunriders.
Afternoon: Take in the panoramic views, and relax in the peaceful hotel Spa or visit the houses carved in the cliffs.
Overnight: Stay in a charming rural cave or in a 4* hotel spa in Graena.
Morning: After breakfast, begin your return journey to Granada.
Cycling Route: Enjoy a scenic downhill ride back to the city, passing through valleys, vineyards, and charming villages along the way.
Lunch: Stop for lunch in a quaint village en route.
Afternoon: Arrive back in Granada and have some free time to explore the city.
End of Tour: The tour ends with a night visit to the Alhambra in Granada, where you’ll say goodbye to your fellow cyclists and new friends.
